If you are considering becoming a commercial truck or a bus driver, you will need to get your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) before you can hit the roadways. Getting your CDL doesn’t’ have to cost a lot of money but does require drive and determination. In an effort to do this, the FMCSA cultivates the standards and testing for commercial drivers. However, before you begin, you need to find out some basic guidelines about getting your CDL.
Necessary Action(s) to Get Your Commercial Driver’s License
Before you begin the process, keep in mind that you DO NOT have to attend trucking school as a means to getting your commercial driver’s license, despite what you may hear. You CAN get your license (specific to what you plan to drive) through driving skills training, knowledge testing and medical examinations. Below is some key information you will need to know/follow if you are considering a CDL:
- The FMCSA stipulates the age of least 21 years old for “interstate” driving; at least 18 years old for “intrastate” driving
- There are many varying types of CDL you can get depending on what type of commercial vehicle you plan to operate, so you need to clarify before you begin. If you have any questions regarding the different types of licensures, contact your local Alabama independent insurance agent
- Contact your Alabama DMV or visit the Alabama CDL licensing website for information on getting your Alabama CDL manual
- Complete and submit your application (fees may apply) for your CDL, either online or at the Alabama DMV
- Provide proof of residency, social security number, and identity. If you have any questions regarding any of the “proof” requirements, it is recommended you contact your local Alabama independent insurance agent
- Take and pass an eye exam and knowledge exam. The FMCSA requires you to be adequately informed on the rules and regulations of the roads in an effort to promote driving safety in the U.S.
- Take and pass both a Medical Examination Report Form and a Medical Examiner’s Certificate Form to ensure you pass medical guidelines before operating commercial vehicles on the roadways
- Once completed and approved, you will be issued a CLP (Commercial Learner’s Permit) at which point you can schedule your driving test (14 day waiting period)
- Take and pass the road skills/driving test using your own vehicle
- If approved, you will then pay for your CDL!
