Owning a home comes with much pleasure and comfort, but also a lot of responsibility.  Homeowners insurance is one of those essential responsibilities to protect perhaps your biggest investment.  You may be familiar with the typical homeowners insurance coverage options such as Dwelling, Other Structures on Your Property, or Personal Liability, but what about a coverage referred to as Medical Payments?  While MedPay may not be a coverage for catastrophic losses, it is wise to know some basic elements of Medical Payments Coverage on your homeowners policy to see how it works and for whom.

What is Medical Payments Coverage?

Medical Payments CoverageThis coverage is a portion of your typical Alabama homeowners insurance policy that can cover medical costs to someone who is injured while on your property, up to the limits outlined on the Declarations Page. No fault on your behalf needs to be shown. Below are certain examples of situations that pertain to MedPay coverage:

  • A guest slips and falls during a dinner party and incurs medical expenses
  • Your dog bites your neighbor while visiting, requiring treatment and stitches
  • Your son’s friend falls over some bricks and breaks his arm, requiring a hospital visit, cast, and follow up visits to the doctor

*Note that regular household members (including you) are excluded from this type of coverage, unless that person is an employee.

Common Examples of Costs Covered Under Medical Payments to Others Coverage, up to the Limits:

  • Doctors’ Visits
  • Hospitalization
  • Emergency Room
  • X-rays
  • Ambulance
  • Dental
  • Prosthetics
  • Funeral

Costs considered under this type of coverage should be deemed necessary and “reasonable” and must be claimed within a certain time limitation.  If you have any questions regarding the time frame, it is recommended you contact your local Alabama independent insurance agent.  *Take note that some exclusions may apply.

Medical Payment Limits

As a homeowner, you can choose the amount of coverage under your standard Alabama homeowners insurance policy.  This can range from $1000 to $5000 and sometimes higher, but keep in mind that if someone does get injured on your property and has medical expenses that exceed that limit, the balance will be your responsibility. If you perceive that your current amount of MedPay coverage needs to be increased due to a higher perceived risk or just want to extend this coverage, call our offices at Burkett & Associates Insurance Agency and we will assist you.
