“Where do I Begin?”

This is a question you may be asking yourself right away when contemplating a clean-out at your home. Considering how to even begin may be intimidating but it doesn’t have to be if you plan correctly.  Let’s break it down by following some basic considerations when trying to clear out unwanted or no longer needed items:

Pace Yourself- Instead of thinking of the huge task of clearing out, break it down into small tasks so you aren’t overwhelmed.  Pick one area of the house as your starting point and go from there to the next location.  Also, set aside small time periods you commit to working on the project. For example, you may want to start in a closet and decide to tackle that first and stick to the allotted time.

Sort All Items- As your declutter journey begins, try to sort all items into three piles: Have boxes or bags available and mark them accordingly: donate, trash, and keep.

Find a Home for Things- You may have drawers filled with a variety of items that aren’t organized. Finding a spot for items you plan to keep will help alleviate the clutter and the inability to find items when you need them.  For example, designate one drawer or basket to house all remotes and cords.

Remove Trash- Have an abundance of trash bags handy to throw away those items you aren’t keeping or donating and remove the trash from the home.

Apply the “One In, One Out” Rule- If you purchase or bring something into your house, you should get rid of one thing as to avoid clutter. You may choose to donate the item or toss it.

Consider the Family’s Wants- When you are going through all your things in the home that you “think” your family members will want to be passed down, go ahead and confirm whether it’s even something that person would want.  If not, consider donating it.
